The Chief Directorate: Operations is responsible for implementation of the departmental programmes which are mainly providing a safe, balanced and equitable Provincial road network through the construction, maintenance and repair of the provincial roads and bridges, ensuring a safe road environment through law enforcement, and ensuring Good Governance, licensing of vehicles, etc.

The Head Office components of the Chief Directorate provide managerial and technical support services to the Regions, other components within the Department, other Departments and the public on an ongoing basis. In addition, construction of selected major road projects that have been identified as strategic routes are managed within this component.

Directorate: Engineering Services, which is headed by Mr Wally Bennett. This Directorate is responsible for Training and Mentoring of In-House staff, Manuals and Guidelines, Contract Administration support, Mechanical support and Materials, Pavement design, Traffic engineering, Geometric design, Structural design, Road information & Survery services, Roadside developement and Expropriations.

This component, which is divided into four sub-components, is responsible for the following:

• GIS and Mapping
• Road Declarations and Registration of Public Right of Ways (PROW’s)
• Aerial Survey
• Contract and Cadastral Survey
• Project Programming and Progress Records
• Project Information Management System
• Implementation Reports

The Road Information Services Section, which is one of the four sub-components, is headed by the Control Technician, Ms M Vosloo, and offers the following services:

• Manage and maintain the Department’s Geographical Information System (GIS).
• Manage and maintain the Department’s Internet Map Server (IMS).
• Road Network and Core Data Management – manage and maintain the spatial and non-spatial data for the Department.
• Manage and maintain the Department’s Road Network Management System (RNMS) and geodatabase.
• GIS Map production and services.
• Produce Road Declarations and Gazette Notices.
• Registration of Public Right of Ways (PROW’s)
• Supply all Departmental Road Numbers and Plan Numbers.
• House, manage, maintain, copy and distribute all Departmental Plans, general road files, Declaration and other records.
• Provision of Road Related information.
• Provision of Real Estate Support and Technical advice.
• Provision of a Road Information Services Help Desk.
